Round the Island Race

Sailing participating and spectating

06 Jul 2018

Saturday 7 July 2018

The annual Round the Island Race, organised by the Island Sailing Club, is a one-day yacht race around the Isle of Wight. The race regularly attracts over 1,600 boats and around 16,000 sailors, making it one of the largests yacht races in the world and the fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK after the London Marathon and the Great North and South Runs.

Spectators can find many vantage points, both on the mainland and Isle of Wight, to watch the race progress. The first start in Cowes for the 2017 race will be at 5.30am.  The boats cross the start line at Cowes in eleven separate groups, starting every 10 minutes from 0530 until 0710 and heading in a westerly direction towards Yarmouth. The boats pass round the Needles Lighthouse, along the south-west coast of the Island to St. Catherine's Point and then up across Sandown Bay to round the Bembridge Ledge Buoy. The fleet then makes its way either side of No Man's Land Fort and across Osborne Bay to the finish line back at Cowes.

You can watch the race from many vantage points around the island, or try them all!  Approximately timings from vantage points are published on the RTIR website.

Based on the iconic TV show, this exhilarating and bouncy challenge will be located close to the beach at  Western Gardens. “It’s the perfect addition this year,” said Councillor Wayne Whittle, “we’re already planning the biggest and best slide to date and once you’re wet, you might as well go for it.”
